Autumn Thoughts: Fingertips in Flight, Chapter Ten

The grand finale arrived as scheduled. Anqi, still wearing the pure white dress she wore to the semi-finals, sat on the piano bench in the center of the stage, her smile still gentle. Her fingers danced across the keys, and the scene of her first meeting with Gu Yichen floated into her mind. He was also like this, playing his favorite music, the melody captivating, drifting away with the falling leaves, flying towards the distant sky…

  August 20, 2017, Suzhou.
Anqi spent a short holiday in Suzhou, attending a photography exhibition at Yuan Hao's invitation. 29-year-old Anqi possessed a refined, elegant, and generous temperament. Her fair face was lightly made up, her long hair cascading behind her ears. A beige wool coat accentuated her petite figure, yet she was no less striking than others.
Anqi walked aimlessly outside the photography exhibition, not wanting to go home or make friends. Suddenly, it started to rain. She glanced at the rain, picked up her bag, and ran towards the eaves where she could find shelter.
The rain showed no sign of stopping; fallen leaves drifted down from the trees, cars passed by frequently, and people ran through the rain. Anqi listened quietly to the rain under the eaves.
"It's raining. Are you listening to the rain too, far away?"

At the nearby intersection, Gu Yichen, holding an umbrella, gazed at Anqi, who was looking up at the rain, a hint of sadness in his eyes.
"Since when did she start to become unhappy?"
A tearing pain shot through his heart; he longed to appear before her and tell her how much he missed her.
The rain gradually stopped, and Anqi walked towards the bus stop.
Cars were busy on the road. Anqi saw the green light turn on across the street and slowly crossed the pedestrian crossing. Suddenly, a motorcycle sped past, almost hitting her, startling her so much that she stumbled back and fell to the ground.
Anqi slowly stood up, wincing in pain, but before she could regain her balance, a hand caught her. She turned around and saw Gu Yichen; tears immediately streamed down her face.
Gu Yichen helped her towards the bus stop, and Anqi stared at him intently, as if afraid he would suddenly disappear.
Gu Yichen turned around and smiled at An Qi, a hint of sadness flashing in his eyes. An Qi suddenly noticed he was wearing glasses, and a pang of pain shot through her heart.
"What's wrong? Are your eyes hurting?" Tears welled up, and An Qi couldn't help but reach out and touch his face.
Just then, a bus slowly pulled up and stopped in front of them.
"Get on!" A magnetic voice entered her ears, stirring a ripple in her otherwise calm heart.
An Qi nodded gently, took his hand, and happily boarded the bus.

  August 29, 2017, Shanghai
. On a tree-lined path on campus, An Qi held Gu Yichen's hand as they walked, reminiscing about the past. An Qi learned that Gu Yichen had gone abroad for medical treatment; the aftereffects of the car accident had affected his eyes, forcing him to leave. As they talked, they unknowingly arrived at the door of the music room. Anqi quickly opened the door, and Gu Yichen drove into the music room. He looked around; everything was the same. A smile played on his face as he slowly walked to the piano bench, sat down, opened the lid, and stroked the black and white keys. Scenes of playing music here before flashed through his mind, along with Anqi's initial awkwardness upon arrival. The melody danced gently from his fingertips, gradually filling the room.
"I can play this piece now," Anqi said happily.
"Oh?" Gu Yichen looked at Anqi incredulously. "Then play it for me!"
  "Okay!"
Anqi sat to Gu Yichen's right, smiling at him. She composed herself, then placed her hands on the keys. Note after note rose slowly from her fingertips, mingling with the falling leaves outside the window, tracing an arc in the sky, like drawing a perfect period in life.
  "Gu Yichen."
  "Hmm?"
  "Let's be together!"
  "Okay!" "
Really? That's great! You can't complain about me, okay?"
"I won't. I like you so much, how could I be annoyed by you..."
  "Gu Yichen."
  "Hmm?"
"How about I be your eyes?"
  "Okay..."
The melody slowly rose, the black and white piano keys danced like elves, fingertips flew across the keys, the two smiled at each other, and snuggled together.
