Many years ago, I had a conversation with a classmate. His wife had recently passed away, and he told me that while sorting through her belongings, he found a silk scarf they had bought at a designer store during a trip to New York.
It was an elegant and beautiful designer scarf, the price tag still attached. His wife had always been reluctant to use it, wanting to save it for a special occasion. He paused here, and I didn't respond. After a while, he said, "Never save your good things for special occasions. Every day you live is a special day."
Since then, whenever I think of these words, I often put down my chores, find a novel, turn on the stereo, lie on the sofa, and seize some time for myself. I admire the view of the Tamsui River from the floor-to-ceiling windows, ignoring the dust on the glass. I take my family out to eat, regardless of what to do with the food at home. Life should be an experience we cherish, not days we have to endure.
I once shared this conversation with a lady. When we met later, she told me she no longer kept her beautiful china in the wine cabinet like she used to. She used to think she'd save it for special occasions, but then she realized that day never came. "The future" and "someday" were no longer in her vocabulary. If there was anything to be happy about, anything to be proud of, she wanted to hear it and see it now.
We often want to get together with old friends, but we always say, "We'll find an opportunity."
We often want to hug our grown-up children, but we always wait for the right moment.
We often want to write to our significant other, expressing deep affection, or letting them know how much we admire them, but we always tell ourselves there's no rush.
Actually, every morning when we open our eyes, we should tell ourselves that this is a special day. Every day, every minute is so precious.
Someone said: You should dance as if no one is watching. You should love as if you've never been hurt. I also want to dance and love as much as I want. What
about you? Isn't the first thing you do to share this thought with a good friend?
