How to improve speed reading skills

For beginners, reaching the level of reading a page at a glance is unrealistic and requires long-term training.

When practicing speed reading, it's best to avoid professional books such as accounting, law, or classical texts like the Four Books and Five Classics. These books require a significant amount of time to understand and are not suitable for speed reading. Of course, once your reading speed reaches a certain level, it will be very helpful for studying professional textbooks.

Besides suitable training materials, another crucial aspect is mastering reading speed.

We can choose our training speed based on our basic reading speed. Typically, we divide each line of text into several parts, reading half a line, a third, or a quarter of a line at a glance. In short, it should be faster than the basic reading speed.

If you are training on your own, you can consider buying a metronome (the kind commonly used for learning piano), set to one beat per second or half a beat per second, and then jumping your eyes to follow the beat, one jump per beat. This will allow you to read at a consistent speed.

After we've actively sped up our reading of a passage, we don't need to rush to read it a second or third time. Instead, we proceed to the second step: "closed-eye recall." This means closing your eyes and carefully recalling what you just read, seeing how much you actually understood, grasped, and absorbed.
